Texas Holdem Rules: The Deal and the Blinds

The texas holdem rules start with one forced bet. Two players post blinds before the deal, and the button, a marker, moves one seat left after every hand.

1. The player left of the button posts the small blind; the next player posts the big blind. Say the blinds are 10 and 20 chips.
2. Every player receives two private cards, the hole cards, face down.
3. A betting round begins with the player left of the big blind.
4. Three shared cards, the flop, come next, then a fourth, the turn, then a fifth, the river.
5. Players still in the hand show cards and the best five-card hand takes the pot.

Every hand has 1,326 possible two-card starting combinations, which collapse into 169 distinct starting hands once suits are ignored.

Round by Round: What You Can Do at Each Street

Each stage ends with a betting round, and the options depend on whether someone has already bet.

A check means passing the action without betting, and it is only allowed when nobody has bet. A raise must at least match the size of the previous bet or raise. In a no-limit game you can bet any amount up to your whole stack; pot-limit and fixed-limit games cap it lower, and the table’s info screen states which structure you are sitting in.

The Ten Hand Rankings, Best to Worst

Every showdown uses the same ladder. Memorise it once and you can read any board.

Suits never rank against each other. If two players hold the same hand type, the higher cards win, and the pot is split only when every one of the five cards matches.

A Worked Showdown With Hypothetical Hands

Say the final board is A of clubs, K of hearts, 7 of spades, 4 of diamonds and 2 of clubs. Player one holds A of spades and J of spades. Player two holds A of diamonds and 9 of diamonds.

Both players have one pair of aces, and the board’s king is the first kicker for both. The next kicker is the tiebreaker: player one’s jack beats player two’s nine. Player one wins with A A K J 7.

Now say player two held K of clubs and 9 of clubs on that board: the A and 2 of clubs plus those two give four clubs only, so no flush, but a fifth club on the board would make one, and a flush outranks any pair. The lesson is to name your best five cards, compare hand type first and kickers second.
