The figure reflects the game’s mathematics, not a commitment on what one session returns. A 96% RTP is a long-run design figure: 96 units returned for every 100 wagered, over millions of spins instead of hundreds. The remaining 4 is the house edge. During development the studio sets it, and the casino offering the game cannot alter it on most games.

A worked example

The arithmetic is worth doing once. A game returning 96% RTP, played for 500 spins at ₱10, sees ₱5,000 turned over and an expected ₱4,800 come back, an expected loss of ₱200. But a run of 500 spins is a tiny sample, so expect the actual result to fall widely around that figure, and more widely on a game with high volatility. A prediction it is not: the expectation is the centre of a distribution.

Using it in practice

Treat RTP as a way to rank games against one another and not as a measure of your own results. One point of RTP difference is invisible to a single session and meaningful over a catalogue. Then consider the source: a studio that states RTP on its own game pages can be quoted, and a figure repeated from one comparison site to the next, with no primary source, cannot. It makes more sense read together with house edge explained, since the same clause usually carries all of them.

The common misreading

There is a widespread misreading of a 96% RTP as an evening in which a player gets 96% of their money back. It does not. Over short sessions variance dominates outcomes, and the long-run average stays out of reach for any individual because it needs so much play. A 98% game can take a player’s whole stake while a 94% game leaves them ahead, and neither outcome speaks to accuracy of the figures.

RTP fails to be a payout schedule, a guarantee, or a measure of hit rate. Games that return 96% by rare enormous wins and by constant small ones respectively share a rating and yet feel nothing alike. The property mentioned second is volatility, and it is not folded into the other number.
