Roulette bets fall into two groups, and knowing which group a bet belongs to tells you what it pays and how often it wins. Inside bets and outside bets

Inside bets are placed on the numbers themselves, in the grid. Outside bets are placed around the grid on groups of numbers. Inside bets pay more and win less often, and outside bets pay less and win more often.

Roulette odds: how often each bet wins

On a European wheel with 37 pockets, a straight-up bet wins 1 time in 37, about 2.7% of spins. A dozen or column bet covers 12 pockets, so it wins 12 times in 37, about 32.4%. An even-money bet covers 18 pockets and wins 18 times in 37, about 48.6%, because the single 0 is a losing pocket for those bets.

1. Count the pockets your bet covers.
2. Divide by the total pockets on the wheel.
3. Compare the result to the payout: a 35 to 1 payout on a 1-in-37 chance leaves the house a small edge.

American roulette and the double zero

American roulette has 38 pockets, because it adds a 00 next to the 0. Payouts stay the same as on the European wheel, so the extra pocket is pure house gain.

The American wheel also allows a five-number bet on 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3, which pays 6 to 1 and carries a 7.89% edge. Skip that one. Before you sit at a table, check whether its wheel has one zero or two.

A named example: Ben bets ₱100 on red on a double-zero wheel. Red covers 18 of 38 pockets, so it wins about 47.4% of spins, and a win returns ₱100 of profit.

Which roulette bets suit your budget

Match the bet to the length of session you want. Outside bets win often and move your balance slowly, and inside bets win rarely and move it fast. Set your stake at a small share of your session budget, so a losing streak of inside bets does not end the evening. With a ₱1,000 budget, a ₱50 stake gives you 20 bets.
