Omaha poker deals four hole cards, and your final hand must use exactly two of them plus exactly three of the five board cards.

Omaha poker looks like Hold’em with two extra cards, and that is exactly where players lose chips. Four hole cards make big hands common, and one rule about which cards you may use changes every decision. Omaha Poker vs Hold’em at a Glance

Because you hold four cards, you have six possible hole-card pairs to test against the board. That is why flushes and straights are more common in Omaha, and why a plain pair rarely wins.
The Use-Exactly-Two Rule in Action
Your hand is always two hole cards plus three board cards. A worked hypothetical shows the trap.
Say the board is K, 9, 6 and 3 of hearts with the 2 of spades. You hold A of hearts, Q of spades, J of clubs and 8 of diamonds. Hold’em would give you a flush, but Omaha does not: only one of your hole cards is a heart, and you must use two.
- List your six pairs of hole cards.
- Pair each with three board cards.
- Choose the best five-card hand.
- Compare it to your opponents.
Here your best hand is one pair or high card, not a flush. The four hearts on the board mean anyone holding two hearts has a flush, so check the board before you get excited.
Pot-Limit Betting Math
Pot-limit caps your raise at the pot, and the pot includes the bet you are calling. The calculation is short.
You are not sure how much you can raise
Bets that grow this way keep stacks alive for several rounds. It is also why Omaha players talk about pot-sized bets rather than all-ins on the first street.
